Wisconsin

I don’t normally foray into politics in my personal work, but after reading the story of a prank call on NPR, I couldn’t help but illustrate the image that came to mind.

Winter

Some people (ME ME ME ME ME!) have been waiting all season for it to snow in Portland.  Today Mother Nature was kind enough to oblige me and dumped an inch of powder in my neighborhood.  I left the studio for a bit to capture it before the snow inevitably melts away.

Oh, Charlie

Film still from City Lights

I adore Charlie Chaplin.  Yesterday, as I was trapped in an empty, lonely room full of shiny clean pint glasses, I turned to my sketchbook for solace.  Chaplin’s film Modern Times played overhead, and thus played out in my sketchbook as well.

The portrait was adapted from the cover for the movie, Modern Times:

A nice and succinct article about Chaplin’s life is here.

And did you know he was exiled from America for some time?  He didn’t come back until 20 years later, when he was awarded an Honorary Oscar at the Academy Awards.  The amazing and emotional video of that moment is here.

Til next time,

And the Winner Is…….

The winner of my Giveaway was chosen through this “highly scientific” process: Names in a Hat.

After much trepidation, heart palpitations, shuffling and fumbling, a tiny piece of paper was finally withdrawn and the winner is:

CYN of CYNWORKS.COM!

Congratulations!

Thanks to all who entered, and don’t be sad at heart – I’ll have another giveaway in the future.

Of course, if you’re concerned about your child having tantrums, or a wall is looking awfully lonely, or YOU are going to have tantrums, you can always, uhhh….buy a print.  Special request orders are always welcome!

Til next time!

Sometimes the ideas in my head hang out so long they eventually bleed out into real life.

Giveaway!

I’m so pleased with how my solo show went last month that I decided to present my first giveaway!

I will be giving away this beautiful signed and numbered print of Hide & Seek, a work from my Lost Pages solo show.

The print is No. 3 of 3 of a first series.  It is also archival, museum-quality, and was printed by a nice man named Sven.

That’s right, dear reader – YOU have the chance to win this print!

So!  How does it work?

Simply comment below this post with your email address.

That’s it.

WHAAAA?!?  It’s that easy??  YES!

In 5 days time, on Sunday, February 20th, I will randomly select and announce the winner.  Your print will then be wrapped and shipped, by me, directly to you.  For free.

So quit reading already, and enter for your chance to win!

Good luck!

BLUE

I like to draw faces; it’s good practice.  After drawing from observation, you begin to understand where shadows always fall (just under the lip, the nose, the sides of the forehead), so that when you draw from your own imagination, the faces look more realistic.

So…..why, why am I drawing from Faces of Meth?

A long time ago, I used to study people in fashion magazines.  That’s good practice too, but it’s boring.  Not everyone is glamorous and beautiful.  These days I like to draw a visage with a little more character.

I’d had the idea to draw from mug shots before, but when a friend suggested it to me last week, I thought I would go to the most infamous of drug-related mug shots: Faces of Meth.  This site happens to be hosted by Oregon’s own Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office.

After I finished the drawing, Jake was like, “Hey that looks kinda like – “

And I was like, “NO it doesn’t!”

But….he’s kinda right, the portrait is similar to

Eeeeesh.  Entirely unintentional.

Hey, Happy Valentine’s Day!!

One Year

Today marks one year since my very first post – one whole year already!  This little blog has experienced tremendous growth since then, and I want to thank all my lovely readers who continue to look at my doodles.

Now if I can only get a parade like this to actually happen….

p.s. – I’ll be announcing my first giveaway next week!  Stay tuned.

Opening the package I picked up yesterday from my printer was like Christmas.  The prints always turn out so beautifully, and they look exactly like the originals!

I received a few special request orders last week, and spent some time yesterday putting the packages together and sending them out.

A Neil Young print for a buddy in Arizona.

Packaged while listening to Neil Young’s Decade.

What’s that?  Interested in having your own print?

Sometimes you gotta draw the dead flowers before you throw them out.

Last evening was a Drink & Draw event at Apex Bar in SE Portland.  There were beers.  And sketchbooks.  A WINNING COMBINATION.

Here’s what happened in my sketchbook while beers slowly disappeared:

Bummed you missed out?

Don’t worry, dudes, the next Drink & Draw event will be Wednesday, March 9th.  Keep your eyes peeled for more well-timed reminders as the date approaches.

Keep on Drawlin’!

Drink & Draw

Oh and HEY – forgot to mention this previously but

(by Jake Hollomon)

This is tomorrow.  Professional designers, freelancers, the jobless, PNCA alumnis, students, habitual doodlers all welcome.  Come join us.  Fifty beers on tap, no less.  Sketchbooks, scraps of paper, leather-bound books, your laptop – it doesn’t matter!  This is also a great time for picking the brains of people who are doing the same stuff you are.
