The Desert Floor

Sticks, snakes, dusky rose hues, muted violets – the pretty things that make up the desert landscape.

Here is another sneak peek at a piece that will be featured in my upcoming show, Sticks & Stones, at the Guardino Gallery in NE Portland on January 26th.

I was happy to find the time to jam out a quickie comic after making some fine arts.  Life is all about rewards, right?

FLOSSY

OOH LA LA

I don’t have the tendency to splurge on very nice things for myself,  but Santa was nice as hell to me this year and presented me with this WESC leather jacketSwooooon.

Perfect for Portland winters and certain to be worn whilst riding my wee motorbike, all those zippers and buckles and snaps make the tomboy in me squeal like a little girl.

Thanks, Santa Jake!  I’m going to wear it everyday, while cooking dinner, and when I’m sleeping, and taking out the garbage, and drawing, and and and and

Holiday Cards

I made the above illustration for this year’s Christmas cards.

Meowy Christmas, everyone!  Have a wonderful holiday.

Brrrrrrrr.

Welcome to a  slightly holiday edition of From the Desk!

From OK Great, a tour of the wintery installation at the offices of Weiden + Kennedy.  I like the winged wolf.

Have you ever played the drawing game “exquisite corpse”?  The basic premise is to finish a drawing where another person has left off.  See one artist’s take on the solo version.  (Also via OK Great.)

If you haven’t listened to any of the interviews on Sam Weber’s show, Your Dreams My Nightmares, you should.  The latest interview is with his wife, illustrator & cartoonist Jillian Tamaki.

+

Have you ever seen Edward Gorey’s animated intro to the PBS show “Mystery”?  Ahhh, I heart Edward.

+

This would have been a really great Xmas gift to Jake if hadn’t sold out in one f*cking minute.

Treevenge is a horror story told from the perspective of all those Christmas trees that are murderously cut down each year.  Totally amazing and and absolutely horrible at the same time!  Don’t watch it if you get easily offended.  No really.(Thanks Kristin!)

Check out the cartoon results from this experiment: “It was recently theorized that all New Yorker cartoons could be captioned
with “Christ, what an asshole” without compromising their comedic value.”

Louis C.K. is a badass.  A hilarious badass.  This interview with Louis C.K by Terry Gross is a must-listen.

Two weeks ago he released his latest stand-up special for $5, and even though he made it so you could burn copies of it and share it pretty easily on the internet, people bought it anyway.  That’s awesome.  He’s now made a million dollars.  Here’s what Louis C.K. has to say about it here.

WHAT!  These run-down Victorian-style house sculptures by Mike Doyle are nuts!  Because they’re freaking LEGOS.  (via The Fox is Black.)

+

Drunk History film shorts are usually pretty entertaining, but this holiday special really takes the cake (mostly because, yes, it includes Ryan Gosling.) (via the Hairpin.)

Happy Festivus!

Inks

Burgerville, I really really want to support your local, organically made fast food, but dammit!  It sucks every time.  Well, no longer!!!  I will stand firm on it this time.  For reals.  Really.

I’m hungry.

TA DAAAAAAAA

We are literally ecstatic to finally announce the official launch of the Lemolo Baggage website!!

When Eli first approached Jake & I to help him launch his new line of bags, we knew we were in for something special.  It’s been months in the making, with trips to the beach, motorcycle rides, and collaborating with amazing people to pull this all off.

Special thanks to our photographer Dylan Long, contributing photographer Tim Roth,  our LookBook models and real-life buddies, and to our web developer Taylor Eke.

So take a look around, and browse the shop!

Imbibe & Sketch

December’s Drink & Draw at Rontoms was low-key but really fun; we even grabbed a slice of pizza next door at Sizzle Pie afterwards – WILD(STALLIONZ)!!!

We’re looking forward to January’s event – a fresh new year, and hopefully the dust will have settled from all the craziness of this month.

The above sketch is a gross approximation of what an actual Arizona sunset looks like.  Don’t let it dissuade you.  Unfortunately, I was driving during this epic act of nature, so I could only take pictures with my eyeballs.

And later, some brush & ink doodles of humans in close proximity.

Have a wonderful weekend!  Hope to see you guys at the next Drink & Draw.

Desert Dreamin’

I’ve been gone long enough now that I can finally appreciate certain things about Arizona that I took for granted before – big blue sky almost every single day, spectacular sunsets, and when you drive out of the valley – endless desert hills dotted with cacti and dry brush.

We stayed with my good friend Lauren in the charming neighborhood of old town Tempe; it’s one of the few places that remind me of the bungalows in Portland.

It was going to be 70 degrees that day.  I was stoked, Lauren was bummed.  Why?  Because it was a sunny billion degrees there for like 8 months in a row.  When she visits us, she’s always excited that it’s gray, gloomy, and raining.

On Saturday we were a trio of flannels.  Since this was Jake’s first time to Arizona, we were taking a day trip out to Sedona, where snow dusted the red rocks and the day was clear as a bell.  It’s so beautiful out there, you could literally point and click a camera anywhere and it’d be (almost) impossible to take a shitty picture.

The rest of time was spent visiting with family and my old friends.  I showed Jake around the city and took him to all my old schools and favorite haunts.  We ended our day trip with a late night around a firepit drinking Budweiser and listening to Merle Haggard.  It was perfect.

It sure was good to visit home again.  To my AZ homies, I’ll miss you.  Until we meet again.

Cacti

I have yet to sort through all the photos from our recent trip to Arizona, but these shots taken in a “Cactus Room” at a roadside tourist shop in Sedona will undoubtedly stand out as my favorites.  I kiiiiiinda want my whole house to look like this, but given the Portland climate, I suppose that’s a little impractical.  Oh well.  A girl can dream, right?
