Artist Jennifer Parks is part of the Pony Club Gallery collective and was kind enough to include me in this upcoming show in April. Naturally, I’m pretty excited about the ghoulish theme.
If you follow me on Instagram, you’ll already know about some of the sketches and studies I’ve been doing for my contribution; a black & white number of spirits in the dark forest.
Since I’ve finished these drawings, I feel ready to move on to the final piece. OOOH! Exciting stuff, indeed.

Ghost studies
Materials study
I don’t normally perform this much prep work, but there are many components of this drawing that I needed to sort out besides a composition.
I played around with a few “cutesy” spirits before settling on decidedly more “creepy” spirits. I also wanted to integrate more of the bleeding paint technique that I developed with my last art show, Sticks + Stones, so I did a painted forest study.
And then there was the matter of the ghosts themselves – should I paint them in gouache? Allow the white of the paper itself to embody the spirits?
Tracing paper has an inherently ghostly quality, so it seemed the most natural choice. Plus it’ll be like working with little ghost dolls! Cutting them out and adhering them to the dark forested background will be a fun challenge in itself.
Look for glimpses of the final piece in the coming weeks, as I bounce around the different projects I’m working on.

While documenting our home studio last month, Ryan of Marrow Mag took a lot of photographs that focused on our personal styles. You can check out our profiles here & here. Thanks to Ryan for taking such lovely photos!

I watched this young lady cross the street on a gloomy & rainy early February evening; her bright ensemble was hard to miss. With her blonde bowl cut, yellow woolen cape, pale yellow skirt, and colorful scarf, she trotted to her car like a cheerful harbinger of Spring.

Hey! It’s Jake….on a bridge. In Forest Park!
Hey! It’s me! Holding……a bottle. Cool.
We took these photos before Jake’s camera crapped out on us, while hiking about in Forest Park on Superbowl Sunday. You know, that day people have bean dip parties and watch commercials and stuff. The streets were a ghost town and it was a beautiful day with plentiful patio seating.
With my art show over I’ve been working on my first comic book, which I’ll be debuting at this year’s Stumptown Comics Fest! I’ll be sharing a table with Working Class Press member Jim Hill. That being said, I haven’t been doing too much Internetz surfing, but here and there I’ve discovered a few tasty bits:

The illustrations by the awesome Jon Klassen for the new book, House Held Up By Trees, are beautiful, and remind me just a bit of my favorite painter Andrew Wyeth.

Do you love/hate perfectly designed and appointed homes? You’ll probably enjoy this blog.

Quentin Blake illustrated some of my favorite childhood novels by Roald Dahl, including Matilda and The Witches. This video tour of his studio archives and illustration process is truly fascinating.

Illustrators & Cartoonists, get pissed: The NY Times is holding a contest for spec work, and the lucky winner will receive $200! Apparently they contacted some of the top illustrators in the industry. Another example of the infuriating struggle to get paid what you’re worth.

This tumblr blog by Jon Rafman features an awesome collection of images taken by the Google Maps camera. My favorites include the random Wayne & Garth cameo.

Why Being Sleepy and Drunk Are Great for Creativity. DUH.

Illustrator and Laika storyboard artist Vera Brosgol shares her process for creating a comic book panel. I love seeing how other people work! Her post for the Hourly Comics Day is great too.

This is kinda random, but after watching the Jean Michel Basquiat documentary, Radiant Child, I was mesmerized by the music during the end credits. It’s hard to track down, but take a listen. Preferably while it’s raining (Portland: check!) and you’re feeling introspective and wistful. Warning – there’s saxophone.

Here’s another peek at a process that I loved: Carson Ellis shares the sketches and ideas that led up to the book cover for her husband Colin Meloy’s first novel, Wildwood. Wonderful and insightful.
I’m off to start a gloomy and rainy weekend. Happy Friday kids. Cheers!
What happens when a bunch of artists get together, imbibe adult beverages, then collaborate on their own version of the drawing game Exquisite Corpse? They draw like toddlers. With some cats and stuff.
Unsurprisingly, I drew some flowers in my sketchbook. And a turtleneck.
We had great company at Drink & Draw last evening, including Keith Carter (currently showing at the Pony Club Gallery), Jim Hill, and the lovely Brooke Weeber, among others. Here’s looking forward to next month!

While a bunch of people woke up that Saturday morning and thought, “Yeah I’m just gonna throw on these track pants and sloppy t-shirt and I know it’s February but fuck it – I’m wearing flip flops”, this lady also woke up and said, “I’m going to wear my coral tweed jacket with fur trim and coordinating skirt, stockings, and heels, and yes, of course my hair will be done”. She wins over everybody, hands down.

I spotted this young lady in her little red coat just outside City State Diner. It was a beautiful Saturday, bright and sunny with a big blue sky; a February day with a hint of Spring in the air. I was fond of her bleached and choppy pixie cut.

Ryan of Portland-centric online magazine, Marrow Mag, was kind enough to feature Jake & I at our home and in the studio.
Ryan is a pretty swell dude and we found we shared more than a few common interests. He took a ton of photos with both digital and analog film, and he promises another feature or two to come. Check out the post here!
Have a lovely weekend, everyone. Cheers!
