Stumptown Comic Fest 2012

First off – my camera is still broken.  Which is a bummer.  So for those of you that already follow my Instagram, these images will be redundant.  SARRY.  For those of you who don’t, YAAAAY, fresh new images!

This year’s Stumptown Comics Fest was my first ever as an exhibitor, and I debuted my (first ever) little comic, Adult Babysitting Vol. 1.

Our table (shared with Working Class Press member Jim Hill) was pretty modest, with an absence of professional banners and a meager selection (on my part) – just my small comic and an array of art prints for sale.  Our banner was just a stretch of canvas on which I hand painted ZOMBIES + BOOZE.

But certainly one of the biggest draws to our table, besides ZOMBIES + BOOZE, was my classy fake bar setup.  Like a tractor beam, we ensnared several folks wandering past with the promise of libations, only to be bitterly tricked by our ruse.  The myriad of reactions was one of the more entertaining aspects of our weekend.

“Wait…..is this REAL???”

“Apple juice?  This is bullshit.”

“I don’t like this.”

“Very funny, guys.”

“This is by far my favorite table.”

“I am going to get SO wasted.”

I mostly stuck to our table, and talked with all of people that came by.  And I met lots of friendly comic folk, including Roman Muradov, Chuck Groenink, Emi LennoxZack Soto, and Jason Fischer.  Despite STCF’s status as a smaller, underground, and indie crowd, the selection was nonetheless overwhelming.

There’s an inevitable amount of downtime, and as my Instagram friendz already know, I spent much of that time drawing.  I’ll be posting the rest of my doodles over the next week.

And I sold a ton of prints!  What I didn’t sell will be available in my Etsy shop later this week.  Also, if you didn’t get your copy of Adult Babysitting already, buy one now.  Like, right now.  Go ahead.  It’s five whole dollars.  That’s it.

To all the awesome people I met with over the weekend – a big THANKS!  It was a blast.

Comic Pre-Sale! // Adult Babysitting

If you hear trumpets blaring and you happen to see random circus folk tumbling and parading around the streets of Portland, it’s probably because my first comic, Adult Babysitting, is now available in a special pre-sale!

Yup, you can buy a copy right here before I debut the comic at this weekend’s Stumptown Comics Festival!  And if you’re in town, you should totally be a righteous dude/dudette and stop by the convention center this weekend.  I’ll be there with my buddy Jim and Jake and I’ll be peddling the world’s finest apple juice in my authentic bar setup!

STCF is going on Saturday, April 26th from 10am – 6pm, and Sunday, April 27th from 12pm – 6pm.

Cheers yall.

Collaboration // Around the Campfire

One of the central themes of the collaborative drawings I’m cookin’ up with Brooke Weeber is patterns – stripey, southwestern-y, tribal-y goodness. Those are all big ticket Scrabble words.

Other things that continue to pop up are disembodied arms, flags, teepees, cabins, and DUH, animals!  Look at them bear bro’s just haaangin.

I’m quite fond of the geometric blob (Art History glossary term) that Brooke first created, leaving me patches here and there to finish.

And IN CASE YOU LIVE UNDER A ROCK or maybe you have never ever read this blog before or maybe you don’t follow me on Instagram or maybe on Twitter or maybe on Facebook or maybe you don’t know me in real life, but:

We are showing all these drawings next month.  That’s May.  After the 7th.  At Farm.

Thank you.

Collaboration // Announcement

I’ve had horses on the brain (as well as Pink Gummy Bears, and warrior ladies with pointy hats), and in this collaboration drawing with Brooke Weeber they came colliding together.

Brooke populated her half with a lovely mountain range that serves as a platform, with a smattering of cabins and teepees.  The villagers braced themselves for the mighty announcement, which may or may not have been, “IKEA finally completes store renovation!!” or “Buy one get one FREE Fro-Yo cones!!”, but more likely it was something like, “SUMMER will be here in TWO MONTHS!”.  The villagers rejoiced.

See this actual drawing and many more at Farm this coming May!

Portland People // Man in a Bush

Like, why not, right?

Burnside and SE 12th Avenue.

Collaboration // Cape

Here is another in a series of collaborations with Portland artist Brooke Weeber.  She handed over her half, which featured the central lady figure, feathered chandelier, and nature setting.  I was left to fill in the blanks.  What better than a creepy wolf homie, ornamental squigglies, and blobby spheres (I’m referencing highly technical artist’s terms here)?  I thought so too.

Ooh, details!

Even more details!

Part of a series of twelve, we’ll be showing these works this May at Farm in Southeast Portland.

Collaboration // Homestead

This month I’m working on collaboration drawings with lovely Portland illustrator Little Canoe, aka Brooke Weeber.  I’ve never really drawn with anyone besides Jake, but Brooke and I have very similar sensibilities, so the creative process has been quite natural.

We met up and decided on a few themes to focus on.  The meeting kinda went like this:

Wolf: “I LIKE FLOWERS”

Canoe: “Patterns and Manimals!”

Wolf: “I LIKE FLOWERS”

Canoe: “Nature!”

Wolf: “SKULLZ”

Uhhhh so it was a little more sophisticated than that, but you get the idea.

We each completed half of six drawings, then traded and are now filling the rest.  You know what?  SO FUN.

Brooke and I will be debuting our collaborations, as well as our own works, this coming May at Farm in Southeast Portland.  Dates and reception information coming soon!

In the meantime, be sure to click around Brooke’s mini internet empire comprised of her Tumblr, Etsy, and Society6, all of which put my lackluster internetz efforts to shame.

No Jacket Required

March was simply too crazy for me to fit in any Portland People drawings, and I missed doing them.  So naturally I squeezed one in yesterday, making myself just a little bit late for work.

I spotted this little fellow just a few days ago at a bus stop on 39th and Powell.  The weather was incredibly temperamental that day, at once sunny, hailing, and with heavy sheets of cold Spring rain.

See the rest of my Portland People series here.

Audience // GHOST Show

With my comic book at the printer, I was finally able to finish up the illustration that I’m contributing to the Pony Club’s GHOST Show.

Even with all the prep work I completed before I embarked on the final drawing, the process wasn’t without a few foibles.  I managed to majorly eff up one little doll, but impressively, I did not throw a childish tantrum and instead calmly carried on.  Like a real adult, you know?

fuck.

So here’s the final work!  It’s a classy 2 x 3 feet.

Come see the actual piece, for really real, this Thursday at the Pony Club Gallery.   I’ll be showing my ghoulish drawing with tons of other great artists!
