Drink & Draw | November

YEAAAAAHHHHH!  Pink & Zephyr won’t be there, but we will.

Pink & Zephyr

Note the Lemolo cameo.

Lately my brain has been swirling with more ideas than I’ve had time to draw them.  Not to mention, I’ve got another impending art show deadline.  The problem is that I can’t stop with these dang comics!

At Wednesday’s Drink & Draw, I decided to execute a quick 3-panel comic based on an off-hand comment Jake had made.  Lately, the comics I’ve been making were autobiographical, but for this idea I thought I needed some fictional characters.

And so, Pink & Zephyr were born, in the most spontaneous fashion: taking my first thought, and running with it.

I completed the ink & drawing stage at the Drink & Draw, and digitally colored the comic later.  And yep, I’ll be posting these with all my other comics, at ye ol’ Tumblr.

I neglected to bring along a camera last night, but we had a great crowd that included a lot of the creative folk from Roundhouse, the agency where Jake works.  Keep a lookout for next month’s event.

Get Wild

Isn’t this month’s Drink & Draw flyer pretty dang adorable?  That young Eagle, Jake drew it last night.

Take note, that with the onset of shitty weather, the venue has changed to Ron Toms, at 600 E Burnside.  See ya next Wednesday!

Drink & Draw: September

To create this month’s flyer, I borrowed a page from a child’s school folder I had found buried in a bin at Goodwill.  Why these things are tossed aside I’ll never understand.

Sketch: August Drink & Draw

Great crowd last week for our monthly Drink & Draw event!  Jake’s dad, PNCA Illustration professor, Kurt, came out to join us as well.

A few of us participated in a rousing game of  “Draw Batman with Your Eyes Closed”.  Winner was undetermined, prizes were “Buy Yourself Another Beer”.

I came away with two sketches from the evening.

If you haven’t joined us yet, come out next month!  September’s Drink & Draw is slated for Wednesday, September 7th.

Also, we’ll be looking for a new venue for the coming winter months (I can’t even believe I’m already f’king typing those words) in SE Portland.  Suggestions welcome – we just need a joint with good lighting.  And booze.

BE THERE and soak some of those fleeting summer rays.

Encouraging words of encouragement.

Lots of fun possibilities with these hand-painted words.

In other news, I’m getting a lot of mileage out of this drawing:

First, used in collaboration with Jake as a Thank-You to artists Ward Schumaker and Vivienne Flesher for inviting us to their home during our visit to San Francisco:

And later, again as our current Drink & Draw flyer:

Which is next Wednesday!  Come and join us, ye olde creative folks.

Drink & Draw: June

Many a good folk came out and braved mild winter non-summer weather for June’s Drink & Draw event.  Beers were imbibed and doodles were made on Apex’s expansive patio while we exchanged nerdy discourse on everything from bad art, film editing, and horror flicks.

FIFTY BEERS.  Apex.  Beer.  Good.

I brought entirely too many supplies (practically everything I use in my studio) and lamented over my lack of hair dryer to speed up the drying of my soppy watercolor pages.  However, Mom Nature was kind enough to oblige with some blusters of her own.  Here are the results of my beer-induced drawing;

(My version of sexxy lady wears high collars and towering beehives)

Yes, my scanner keeps shaving off those precious last few centimeters, even though the table space is there.  I don’t get it.

These color experiments continue to play out in my sketchbook, allowing me to ruminate on bigger versions.  Shout out to my Sakura White Gelly Roll pen for all the fancy detailing.

Thanks to EVERYONE that came out last evening, and Jake & I look forward to hosting next month’s Drink & Draw event!  We have invited the Sun and rumor has it he’ll be there.
