Art Opening // All in a Day’s Work

A few weekends ago we accompanied Jake’s dad, Kurt Hollomon, to Bay City to attend the opening of an art show he curated, All in a Day’s Work, at ArtSpace Gallery.

We arrived in strangely color-coordinated outfits and met with the artists featured in the exhibit, Sophomore year students at PNCA.  It was a lovely showing of work from very promising artists.

Check out the work and find out more about the artists in Jake’s post about the opening.

Happy Birthday, Kurt!

Yesterday I gathered with Jake’s family to help celebrate the birthday of his dad, Kurt Hollomon.  Kurt is an Illustration professor at PNCA and a seriously talented sketchbook junkie.  He was also my teacher while I was at PNCA, long before I ever met Jake.  Life is funny that way.

Kurt could probably draw both Jake and I under the table, no problem.  Visit Kurt’s blog for a glimpse at his sketchbook.  And to see how the apple didn’t fall far from the tree, like, AT ALL – take a gander at Jake’s own sketchbook.

You can also watch this great profile video of Kurt (edited by our buddy Chris Bodven) and read this special feature on Mister Mort’s blog.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY KURT!

Inspiration: Chris Van Allsburg

You may not recognize the name, but you’ll certainly recognize his work.

Chris Van Allsburg is the writer and illustrator of many award-winning children’s books, including:

And, yes, Jumanji and the Polar Express have both been turned into major Hollywood movies, but screw the cinema – look at these drawings!

from Jumanji

from Jumanji

from The Widow’s Broom

from The Garden of Abdul Gasazi

Originally a sculptor, Allsburg was encouraged by his wife to try his hand at children’s books.  His first book, The Garden of Abdul Gasazi, won the Caldecott Honor Medal in 1980.  He has since written and illustrated 16 books. He is, needless to say, The Man.

I am fascinated by Chris’ technique.  A master of pastel and pencil, he is able to create beautifully soft, tangible atmospheres.  I have admired his illustrations since I was small, and found them more inspiring than any cartoon I’ve ever watched.

You may read more about Allsburg at his official site.

Eagle + Wolf: Kurt’s Birthday

Yesterday was the birthday of Kurt Hollomon.  Kurt is an Illustration instructor at PNCA, and was a professor of mine last Spring.  He has an amazing passion for drawing, ink, and map-making, with years of experience as an Illustrator and Art Director.  You can see his work here.

Kurt also happens to be the dad of my amazing boyfriend, Jake.  I did not meet Jake until long after I had left PNCA, but the world certainly works in strange and mysterious ways.

So, naturally, we decided to collaborate on a birthday card:

I drew a portrait of Jake, and he in turn made a portrait of me.  This is the first time we have collaborated on paper.

You can see the difference in the way we work in our pencil sketches as well.  My lines are faint and I erase as I go, Jake’s are stronger and have more “search” lines.  We both rely on the ink to the find the true form of our figures.

Happy Birthday, Kurt!  I hope you enjoyed the card.

This month promises to be very busy – I cannot believe it’s May already!  So many projects, so little time.  Stay focused!  More Eagle + Wolf on paper to come this week.
